1. The organisation
Ocado is best known in the UK as an online supermarket. The FTSE 100 company helped to open up the online grocery market in the early part of the century and has revolutionised the entire logistics of the market with its CFCs (Customer Fulfilment Centres) which use highly automated warehouse and logistics technology to pick, pack and ship groceries.
However, the company is also a major technology vendor selling its technology, techniques and expertise to other retailers across the globe.
2. The challenge
When Ocado first engaged Impellus in 2016, the company had 6,000 employees, was growing fast in the supermarket business and had moved into the technology solutions market. The rate of growth meant recruitment, onboarding and developing management were big challenges. Finding a provider who could provide consistency of results in a flexible manner over a growing geographic base were key challenges.
As the company was effectively splitting into two main areas – Customer service Delivery and Project Management and Technology, it means that training teams would be split but there would need to be common delivery in certain areas with management and leadership being a key example.
3. The training
Ocado initially used Impellus open courses to deliver training on an as-needed basis but quickly moved towards providing Certificates of Learning to develop managers. The solution meant that managers at different levels and in different locations could access both the same level and standard of training, attend on differing dates over the same time period to lessen impact on the day-to-day business, and also choose some different modules to personalise their Certificates to their requirements.
Latterly the company has used Impellus to fast track management talent into more senior leadership positions.
By using in-house learning and development, Impellus has been able to bring small groups of potential leaders together to train on strategic leadership and help to ensure new skills and thinking are implemented in teams.
4. What they said
We’ve worked with Impellus now over many years and their attentiveness, quality of product and flexibility have made them a valuable partner in bringing our talented managers through. Their training challenges managers and focuses them on the real-world problems that high-performing managers or leaders will face.

5. The results
Over the years of working together, Impellus has trained Ocado’s managers across the UK and, indeed, across the world. Over 100 of the managers trained have been identified as potential future senior leaders.
‘As we move to being a truly global business with interests and partnerships across the world, we know that our work with Impellus has helped to enable that growth’, says Butcher.
We can only grow as well as our leaders can take us and their development over the years has been in no small part down to the support we’ve had from Impellus.
